Methodology

The same yardstick, applied to every brand, in the open.

The number on its own does not matter. What matters is that we run the identical rubric against every brand in a category, most of it measurable, and show our work. Here is exactly how it is scored.

What this is

An independent, outside-in measurement of DTC product-page quality, benchmarked against a brand's category, with a prioritized diagnosis of what is costing conversions. We hit the page the way a first-time customer does, cold and on mobile, with no installation and no store access.

What this is not

We are not a build shop and we do not grade taste. We hand the prioritized list to whoever builds, your team or your agency. Staying out of implementation is what keeps the score independent: the measurement is never a sales pitch for our own dev work.

The rubric

Five dimensions, weighted into 100.

The score out of 100 is split across the five dimensions by weight. Within each dimension, the criteria below carry the share listed. The weights follow the questions a buyer actually asks: can I trust this, is it for me, how do I buy. Social proof carries the most. Mobile performance is a precondition, not a pillar.

Why the weights look like this

Buying online means buying without touching the product, so the page has to do all the trust-building that a shelf and a salesperson would do in a store. Two things carry most of that decision: the page is clear and visibly credible, and other people are visibly buying it. That is why social proof carries the most weight, with clarity and ease of purchase right behind it. Brand earns trust too, but it is built over years and cannot be read off a single page, so we do not pretend to score it. We measure the trust a page can build on its own.

The honest part

Measured versus assessed.

Most of the score is fact, not opinion. We are explicit about which is which.

Measured (objective)

  • Mobile performance, from Google PageSpeed
  • Whether the page exposes Product structured data
  • Whether a star rating and review count are present
  • Image count and whether a video is on the page
  • Whether variant pickers, shipping terms, and a return policy appear on the page
  • Whether the Add to Cart button sticks on mobile scroll

Assessed against the rubric

  • ~Whether the value proposition actually answers "why this, why now"
  • ~Whether a first-time visitor can tell who it is for
  • ~How specific and compelling the CTA copy is
  • ~Whether imagery is lifestyle or just studio shots
  • ~The overall mobile image experience

The assessed dimensions ride on the same rubric applied to every brand, so they stay comparable even where judgment is involved.

A second lens

AI-Shoppable, scored separately.

As shopping moves toward AI assistants and answer engines, a page also has to be readable by machines. Alongside the conversion score, every audit runs a separate AI-Shoppable check, 0 to 100, entirely deterministic. It looks at whether the page exposes Product structured data and Open Graph tags, and whether the site lets AI crawlers in at all. It is reported on its own, never blended into the conversion score.

How the number reads

85–100Optimized
70–84Solid
55–69Average
40–54Underperforming
0–39Critical

The overall score is the sum of the five dimensions. We then place it against the median and quartiles of every other brand scored in the same category, so you see where you actually stand, not just a number in a vacuum.

When we will not score

Flag, do not tank.

Pages are captured cold, so sometimes a popup or consent banner covers part of the page. We will not score a dimension zero just because we could not see it, that would measure the popup, not the page. When something material is obscured, we hold the audit for review instead of publishing a misleading number. A real overlay that a cold visitor also hits is recorded as friction, because it is.

Who is behind it

ActivateMerchant is run by Eric Dewhirst, who has spent his career fixated on one thing: conversion. Turning arrival into a signup, with the friction taken out. He built internet mapping before Google Maps, ridesharing before Uber, and AI-powered lead capture before it was a category. Two of the three became acquisitions, by Yahoo and Constant Contact. The throughline has never changed: how does a product prove its value fast enough to convert. For a DTC brand, that question is answered on the product page.
