About

We keep score for DTC product pages.

ActivateMerchant scores e-commerce product pages from the outside, the same way for every brand, and ranks them within their category. It is the benchmark for how well a product page earns a stranger's trust and turns a visitor into a buyer.

Most ways of judging a product page either live inside the store (apps, pixels, session tools that need access) or live inside one person's opinion. Neither gives a brand the one thing it actually wants to know: where do I stand against the brands I compete with, and what are the ones beating me doing differently.

So we built the outside-in version. We hit a product page the way a first-time customer does, cold and on mobile, with no installation and no access. We score it on a consistent rubric weighted toward what actually decides an online purchase, and we place it against every other brand we have scored in the same category. The result is a number that means something because the same yardstick produced it for everyone.

A score on its own is just trivia. The useful part is the comparison: you are 12th of 20 in your category, here are the three things the brands ahead of you do on their pages that you do not. That is the report we deliver, and the work that follows is how a brand closes the gap.

Same yardstick, in the open

Every brand is scored the same way, and the full methodology is public. Authority comes from consistency and transparency, not from claiming to be the smartest opinion in the room.

Outside-in

No installation, no store access, no pixel. We measure the real cold-load experience a first-time visitor gets, which is also what makes a fair cross-brand benchmark possible.

Fair before right

A score is one methodology’s point of view at a moment in time, not a verdict on a company. Any brand can ask us to review, correct, or remove its listing.

Who is behind it

ActivateMerchant is run by Eric Dewhirst, who has spent his career fixated on one thing: conversion. Turning arrival into a signup, with the friction taken out. He built internet mapping before Google Maps, ridesharing before Uber, and AI-powered lead capture before it was a category. Two of the three became acquisitions, by Yahoo and Constant Contact. The throughline has never changed: how does a product prove its value fast enough to convert. For a DTC brand, that question is answered on the product page.
